Diversity Statement

A diverse set of life experiences allows us to see the world from the perspective of others and enriches our lives when we realize how others live theirs. I am the oldest of 4 children born to Mexican immigrants with only primary school educations and no experience with the English language. I spoke only Spanish in my early childhood, and I was placed in Spanish-only curriculum through the third grade. I was born with a speech impediment (stutter/stammer), which made transitioning to a new language when I entered the fourth grade even more difficult. Eventually I became the first in my family to graduate from college, as well as the first to earn a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. These experiences have made me compassionate and understanding of other’s backgrounds because I know how important it is to be supportive, especially in a learning environment. As such, these experiences have shaped how I approach diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and has become a core part of who I am as an academic.

Previous and Current Work

  • Profesional Service

I have been serving on the Paleontological Society’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the Education and Outreach Committee. I also recently joined the Stanford Earth Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Council.

As a member Paleontological Society’s Diversity and Inclusion committee, I have organized and co-hosted webinars offered to society members on topics of work-life integration and mental health. I also helped assemble a list of anti-racism resources for society members. You can find those here.

  • Mentorship

I have served as a research mentor for the 8-week Summer Undergraduate Research in Geoscience and Engineering (SURGE) program at Stanford University that is designed to give research experience and professional development for students from underrepresented backgrounds from universities outside of Stanford. I have also served as a mentor for the On-to-the-Future program of the Geological Society of America meeting to provide mentorship for students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in a career in the geosciences.

  • Teaching

Creating an inclusive and open environment in my classroom is essential for creating the best possible teaching environment for students by providing an equitable learning experience. I have taken the time to learn about common mental health issues that affect students, as college students are a growing demographic afflicted by mental health issues (American Psychological Association, National Institute of Mental Health). Based on these issues, I have incorporated social and emotional learning approaches when teaching.

History of Racism and Colonialism in Paleontology

I am the lead author on a collaborative paper that offers a brief review of the history of racism and discrimination in paleontology with the aim of illustrating how this history of racism continues to influence the discipline of paleontology today. We wrote this paper with the aim of sparking further discussion within our discipline, institutions, and professional societies. You can download the paper below.
